Launceston Airport is embarking on a multi-million-dollar terminal renovation project.
Billed as the biggest overhaul to Launceston’s terminal in 20 years, the refresh will add three new food and beverage outlets and increase passenger amenities. It comes as the airport continues to break pre-COVID-19 traffic records.

“As part of the project, the Departure Hall’s footprint will be expanded to increase the leisure space for travelling passengers,” the airport said in a press release.
“Three amenity blocks will undergo a complete refresh, and modern traveller conveniences such as fast Wi-Fi and charging points will be added in addition to more seating for passengers wanting to take in the airport’s spectacular views.”
According to Shane O’Hare, CEO of Launceston Airport, when finished the terminal will become a “world-class departures experience”.
“Launceston Airport has been Tasmania’s tourism gateway for 94 years and as we embark on an ambitious vision for the future it’s important that we celebrate and embrace the incredible history of this airport,” he said.
“This will be the biggest renovation of our terminal in almost 20 years and marks a new chapter in Launceston Airport’s history.
“These works, blending modern infrastructure design elements that capture our unique Tasmanian identity, are another step towards a complete terminal redevelopment which began with our $14 million Check-in Hall and security screening project and will continue next year in our Arrivals Hall.
“Working closely with renowned Tasmanian architects Cumulus, everything about these works, from the names of our bars and cafés to the materials and colours on the walls, has been planned to reflect the beauty and history of Tassie.”
The terminal renovations come after Launceston marked its busiest-ever month in January 2025, with 159,032 passengers. Additionally, 6,114 passengers passed through the airport on 2 January, a new daily record and the first time it had handled more than 6,000 passengers in a single day.
January’s record followed 2024 as Launceston’s best calendar year on record, with 1,428,223 travellers from January through to December, up 4 per cent on 2023. The airport had broken pre-COVID-19 passenger levels in the 2023–24 financial year.
O’Hare last month also indicated that Launceston was looking to its airline partners to restore Bonza’s former route to the Sunshine Coast.
