The federal government will invest more than $5 million into regional airport infrastructure upgrades across Victoria and Western Australia.
Nine regional airports in Victoria will receive a total of around $4.5 million, while four WA airports will receive around $800,000 as part of the fourth round of the government’s Regional Airports Program.

The Victorian projects include the refurbishing of an old terminal at Ballarat Airport into a new facility for emergency responders and for patients awaiting transfer, as well as a dedicated parking area for aeromedical transport.
“The new facility will mean that whether you’re on your way to fight a fire, or have a family member needing emergency health care, there will be a safe and appropriate place to wait, regardless of the weather outside,” Federal Transport Minister Catherine King said.
“Ballarat Airport plays a critical role within our region throughout bushfire season, and in supporting emergency healthcare all year long. The benefits of this investment will be felt far beyond the boundaries of the City of Ballarat.”
Mildura Airport will receive $1.9 million to repair its main runway and pavement areas, while Maryborough Aerodrome will receive $210,000 in upgrades. Warrnambool Airport will see around $186,000 to upgrade its main apron, and around $138,000 will be spent to reseal the Yarrawonga runway to allow continued use of the aerodrome.
In Western Australia, around $358,000 will construct a fit-for-purpose sealed apron and associated line marking at Northam Airfield, Cunderdin Airport will see $153,000 in safety upgrades, and almost $27,000 will resurface the runway at Boyup Brook’s airstrip.
Minister for Resources, Minister for Northern Australia and Federal Member for Brand Madeleine King has welcomed the upgrades, saying the airfields are vital to the communities they serve.
“These sorts of works can make a real and lasting difference in our state’s regional communities, allowing them to access health and other services from their own towns,” Minister King said.
“I look forward to seeing the profound benefits these projects will unlock as they get underway.”
The grants follow $12 million for regional NSW airports announced last month, also as part of round 4 of the program.
“We’re backing regional communities by backing regional aviation, because we know our regions deserve access to critical services that only aviation can deliver,” Minister King said.
