“Across all participating airlines, on-time performance averaged 82.4 per cent for on time arrivals and 82.2 per cent for on time departures,” the latest report by the Department of Transport read.

“The cancellation rate for the month was 2 per cent. The equivalent figures for April 2024 were 79.2 per cent for on time arrivals, 79.7 per cent for on time departures and 2.3 per cent for cancellations.

“This month’s on time arrivals figure was higher than the long term average performance for all routes (80.7 per cent) and the on time departures figure was also higher than the long term average (81.8 per cent).

“The rate of cancellations was lower than the long-term average of 2.2 per cent.”

Virgin Australia’s chief operations officer, Chris Snook, said the results demonstrated the airline’s focus on improving reliability and performance across its domestic network.

“In fact, in April we achieved our best on-time performance (OTP) result in more than two years, with 84.4 per cent of flights departing on time – which is testament to the efforts of our whole team,” he said.

“We have achieved this while operating the highest number of daily domestic flights of any major airline, which highlights the strength and reliability of our operation.

“Last month, fewer than 1 in 100 flights were cancelled, demonstrating that our commitment to safely performing on time and putting our guests first, is really paying off – and industry leading.”

VARA, which primarily operates in Western Australia, did not cancel any of its 165 flights in April, and also didn’t cancel any of its 194 flights the month prior.
