Newcastle Airport’s new terminal has hosted more than 120 local volunteers in a full-scale Mass Passenger Exercise.

The test on Wednesday was part of the airport’s preparations to open the refurbished international terminal, which will serve Jetstar’s year-round flights to Bali from October with the aim of also attracting other overseas carriers.

Volunteers played the role of passengers as they moved through check-in, security screening, border controls and baggage collection under the supervision of airport staff and partner agencies.

“Participating agencies included Australian Border Force, NSW Police, Fire and Rescue NSW and the Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry who joined airport teams and ground handling partners alongside Jetstar to validate safety and readiness,” the airport said in a press release.

According to Newcastle Airport chief executive Linc Horton, the test shows the airport is “ready to step into its role as an international gateway”.

“Our terminal was absolutely buzzing today with people showing up ready and excited with their bags, surfboards, oversized luggage and even a service dog, people with reduced mobility and hidden disabilities to help us test accessibility. That level of detail and support is what makes this region special,” he said.

“We’re now moving from build to activation and today was about making sure we are ready to deliver from day one.

“This new terminal is for the people of the Hunter and they turned up in droves today to help make it happen. For regulators, our airline partners and the public, it shows we’re prepared to offer a seamless international experience right here in the Hunter.”

Newcastle’s redeveloped international terminal, originally slated to be completed last year, was delayed to this year due to “supply chain issues” and will now open in August.

NSW last year signed a memorandum of understanding with Newcastle Airport for two years of funding from the state’s Aviation Attraction Fund after the commencement of new routes, to entice carriers to launch services.

The airport has signalled it could host daily international flights, including to New Zealand and Singapore, once the upgrades are complete.

Newcastle will also see trans-continental flights starting in September, with QantasLink to fly to Perth using its A319s.
