Opinion: Time for a fresh look at ‘pay-on-delay’
I’m not someone who often finds himself in agreement with Nationals senator Bridget McKenzie, but I admit – when a person has a point, they have a point.
The point the shadow minister for transport has made is this: Australian air passengers need more protection. While Australian Consumer Law is certainly tougher than its equivalents in some other places around the world, we lag behind regions such as Canada and the European Union, which have laws that require airlines to compensate passengers if their flights are unreasonably delayed or cancelled for non-safety-related reasons within the carrier’s control. For example, in Canada, a large airline (such as Air Canada or Flair) must pay passengers CA$400 if they arrive between three and six hours behind schedule, $700 if they arrive between six and nine hours behind schedule, and $1,000 if they arrive more than nine hours behind schedule. Should the passenger choose to be refunded rather than rebooked, the airline still has to pay them $400. The fees are lower for smaller airlines.
