WWII-era P-40 Kittyhawk unveiled, on display in RAAF Museum
The lead up to ANZAC Day 2025, marking the 110th Anniversary of Gallipoli, saw the unveiling of several exciting historical aircraft restoration projects, preserving vital pieces of Australia’s military aviation history. The RAAF Museum at RAAF Base Point Cook took the opportunity at Avalon Airshow in the weeks prior to ANZAC Day to unveil the result of its latest restoration project – a Curtiss P-40E Kittyhawk. The Kittyhawk was the main fighter aircraft used by the RAAF throughout WWII, with over 840 flown by RAAF pilots across eight flying squadrons, and saw several Australian fighter pilots achieve ace status.
One notable “double ace” fighter pilot, Clive Caldwell of the RAAF, was credited as the highest-scoring P-40 Ace, and said the P-40 has “almost no vices”.
