Opinion: Can ‘super squadrons’ change wars?
The United States Air Force has announced the trial of a new ‘super squadron’ aircraft strategy using larger consolidated fighter squadrons, in a move that could herald major changes for how Western fighter divisions are deployed and operate. The change in strategic deployment of fighter aircraft is currently being trialled at Osan Air Base, which is used by the USAF and the Republic of Korea Air Force, near the South Korean capital of Seoul. An initial test of the strategy occurred at the base in October last year, with nine F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft and 150 aircrew moved to the facility to expose any potential maintenance and logistical issues.
Approximately 31 F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter aircraft and more than 1,000 aircrew will be moved to Osan over the following months later this year for the start of phase two of the super squadron trial in October. “We’re working hand-in-hand with the Wolfpack to ensure a smooth transition of both personnel and equipment in preparation for Phase II,” according to a statement from 51st Fighter Wing commander Colonel Ryan Ley. “The 51st Fighter Wing is leading the charge on the Super Squadron Test. I’m proud of what the Mustangs have accomplished already, and I look forward to testing the limits of what we can do over the next year.”
