Vietjet is dropping its services from Sydney and Melbourne to Hanoi, and will consolidate all Australian flights through Ho Chi Minh City.
The Vietnamese low-cost carrier will end its Sydney-Hanoi service on 27 September and its Melbourne-Hanoi service on 3 October, but will gradually ramp up to daily flights from both destinations, as well as Brisbane, to Ho Chi Minh City.

Starting 11 November, Vietjet will fly six times per week from Melbourne to Ho Chi Minh City, increasing to daily on 6 December. Sydney will see six services per week starting 13 November and daily from 7 December, while Brisbane will increase to five flights per week from 6 December.
“In addition to the increased flight frequency, services linking Melbourne and Sydney with Hanoi will be operated via connections in Ho Chi Minh City from October 2025,” the airline said in a press release.
“Aussie travellers can enjoy easy access not only to Hanoi, but also other Vietnam’s popular destinations and key cities across the Asia-Pacific through Vietjet’s extensive network.”
Vietjet had only started operating services between Australia and Hanoi last year, with Melbourne-Hanoi commencing on 4 June and Sydney-Hanoi commencing on 8 June 2024. The airline also flies to Brisbane and three times weekly to Perth, though it dropped an Adelaide service last September.
Speaking in March 2024 ahead of the Melbourne-Hanoi launch, Vietjet vice president Nguyen Thi Thuy Binh had said the airline was “excited” to link Australia with the Vietnamese capital.
“It reaffirms our commitment to offer all Australians and tourists alike with unparalleled opportunities to enjoy unique experiences to a myriad of captivating destinations across Vietnam,” she said.
“We anticipate that this new service will serve as a catalyst, fostering enhanced tourism and economic cooperation between the two nations.”
The low-cost carrier first introduced daily flights from Melbourne and Sydney to Ho Chi Minh City in December 2023, having commenced its service to Melbourne three times per week on Easter Sunday of that year.
The end of Vietjet’s services leaves Vietnamese flag carrier Vietnam Airlines as the only airline offering non-stop flights to Hanoi from Australia, with services from both Sydney and Melbourne; no airline currently operates non-stop to Hanoi from Brisbane.
