What’s old is new again for Air New Zealand’s Dreamliners
As Air New Zealand chief executive Greg Foran prepares to leave the carrier, one piece of good news he can deliver is the launch of its retrofitted Boeing Dreamliners – the first 787-9s in the world to undergo a full refit from nose to tail. The first, ZK-NZH, returned from ST Engineering in Singapore in April after 184 days in the workshop at a cost of $36 million NZD, and flew its first commercial service – from Auckland to Brisbane – on 19 May.
“Seeing the first of our 14 Dreamliners to undergo this transformation arrive home is a huge moment for our people, our customers, and the future of Air New Zealand. We’re so proud to deliver this new experience for those who fly with us around the world,” said Air New Zealand’s chief operating officer, Jeremy O’Brien, earlier this year. “The refurbishment of these interiors has been driven purely by our customers. We had over 18 months of customer research. We had customers through the cabins telling us things that were pain points when they were flying with us, and how we could solve those through really smart design.”
