Qantas has unveiled a new “Economy Plus” product for domestic and short-haul international flights.

The Economy Plus offering, similar to Virgin Australia’s Economy X, will offer passengers up to 40 per cent extra legroom, priority boarding, and priority access to overhead bins. The new seats are expected to roll out from February on Qantas’ 737-800, A321XLR, and A220 aircraft.

A220s will have 20 Economy Plus seats available, with 36 on the A321XLR and 48 on the 737-800. Pricing will be made available closer to the launch.

“This is an evolution of our Economy offering and delivers more choice for our customers while recognising our most loyal frequent flyers with expanded benefits, in the areas we know they value the most,” said Qantas chief executive Vanessa Hudson.

“We’re always looking for ways to enhance the onboard experience and maximise comfort for our customers. We believe this new seating product will be popular with our corporate and leisure travellers when it launches next year.”

According to Qantas, higher-tier frequent flyer members will receive complimentary access to Economy Plus, with Platinum and Platinum One members able to select it on booking, and Gold members within 24 hours of departure.

“Every week, over 21,000 seats are selected by Frequent Flyers towards the front of the economy cabin,” the airline said.

“The launch of the new Economy Plus product comes as the national carrier progresses with its historic fleet renewal program, which includes 48 next generation A321XLR aircraft on order.

“The first two A321XLR aircraft began flying on the domestic network in September, with a third set to arrive before the end of the year.

“Qantas is taking delivery of new A321XLR and A220 aircraft with extra-legroom seating already fitted. The airline will begin reconfiguration of its 737 aircraft in December.”

Qantas’ first domestic A321XLR aircraft, which will replace its older 737-800s, entered revenue service in September. The airline has ordered a total of 48 of the new aircraft, 16 of which will be configured for international routes.

The Flying Kangaroo is also looking to retrofit some of its newer Boeing 737-800 planes to bring the cabin experience in line with the A321XLR.

  • At last, QF has recognised that the poor old back of the bus traveller needs extra leg room, but it appears that there are commercial/loyalty reasons that exclude the occasional leisure traveller from purchasing such a seat which is another way of saying, up you mate. I think questions will be asked here.
