The federal government must put a night time curfew on Jandakot Airport in Perth’s south if a fourth runway is approved, according to the mayor of the local government area the airport is in.
City of Cockburn Mayor Logan Howlett told Fairfax press that with the additional runway that movements at the airport would rise to 514,000 per annum, which would only be acceptable if there was a night curfew and the airport agreed to insulate a number of houses surrounding the airport. According to officers from the City of Cockburn, 70-80 additional houses would require acoustic insulation as a result of the fourth runway, while a similar number of houses in neighbouring shires may also be affected.

Jandakot Airport Holdings managing director John Fraser denied that the impact would be as high as the City of Cockburn anticipated, adding that imposing a curfew at the airport would be detrimental to the airport. “I understand the noise is an impact on residents but it has been an airport for a long time,” he said. “We don’t anticipate the impact would be that bad, especially with new (aircraft noise attenuation) technology.”
Jandakot is a major pilot training centre, with Singapore Flying College, China Southern WA Flying College (pictured) and the Royal Aero Club of WA all operating major training schools there. In addition, it is the WA base for the Royal Flying Doctor Service and the WA Police Air Wing.
