Federal parliament’s inquiry into social effects of FIFO and road DIDO- lifting almost as many- will tread a fine line.
Public and union unrest grows in WA and now very strongly in Central Queensland, particularly Moranbah, centre of vast coal and gas developments. It might for balance also check Commonwealth detention centres, Curtin and Scherger, where businesses claim everything needed is shipped in.

Wider based Broken Hill, Kalgoorlie and Mt Isa have had ups and downs but continue- also as solid service centres. Now BHP needs 500 workers at Moranbah, the area 30,000 all up. House rents- if a vacancy arises- are round $2,000 pw . Emerald hospital – the area’s main one- reportedly survives on FIFO doctors working 3 weeks on 3 weeks off paid up to $3,000 a day.
