Air New Zealand is adding 2,000 trans-Tasman seats to allow Kiwis to fly to Taylor Swift concerts in Australia next year.

The NZ national carrier is putting on extra return flights from Wellington, Christchurch, and Auckland to Sydney and Melbourne in February, as well as adding seats on existing flights, to cope with an anticipated surge in demand from Kiwis snubbed by the songstress’ Eras Tour, which is bypassing the Land of the Long White Cloud entirely.
“When tour dates for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour were released last week, we saw a surge in demand for the final day of our Tasman sale with more than 3,500 Kiwis booking flights to coincide with concert dates,” said Air New Zealand Chief Customer and Sales Officer Leanne Geraghty.
“Now, as general release goes live tomorrow, we’re expecting another surge in demand for travel. To get more Swifties to Australia, we’ve added more than 2,000 seats around the concert dates so fans can travel to the show in ‘Style’ with Air New Zealand.”
The flights – some of which will have the callsign “NZ1989” as an Easter egg for devoted Taylor fans – will go on sale at 2pm New Zealand time on Friday.
“Fans hoping to secure their flights will have to act fast – we expect the additional capacity will sell out swiftly,” said Geraghty.
“During high demand periods, fares increase so we can manage a small supply of seats for last minute travel. We also typically see higher demand and hence pricing for late week and weekend travel dates. We recommend Swifties get on board with booking flights early so they don’t miss out.”
Pre-sale tickets to Taylor Swift’s concert dates in both Sydney and Melbourne sold out within a matter of hours, with a record four million fans besieging Ticketek’s website and waiting in lengthy queues to snap up their seats when sales went live this week. The artist has added new shows in both cities, with tickets to go on sale to the general public on Friday.
