Vietnamese low-cost carrier Vietjet will launch the first direct flights between Perth and Ho Chi Minh City in November.

The twice-weekly return flights on Tuesday and Saturday, beginning 21 November, mark Vietjet’s entry into Australia’s west coast and will raise the airline’s flights between Australia and Vietnam to 19 per week. The route will be serviced by 230-seat Airbus A321neo aircraft.

Perth Airport acting CEO Kate Holsgrove has welcomed the news of Vietjet’s new route, saying it will unlock new destinations for WA travellers.

“Perth Airport, along with the State Government, is in discussions with a number of airline partners to secure non-stop services to its key target markets – Vietnam, India and China,” she said.

“It is a great sign for Western Australia to see airlines show keen interest in delivering new air services to Perth Airport and opening up non-stop access to new international destinations.”

No other direct services currently link WA to Vietnam, though several airlines, including Vietjet, Vietnam Airlines, Jetstar and Bamboo Airways, fly from the east coast to Ho Chi Minh City and/or Hanoi.

Additionally, flights from Perth to Asian destinations have been ramping up in recent months, including Citilink services to Jakarta and Denpasar, increased Cathay Pacific services to Hong Kong, a new Indonesia AirAsia service to Jakarta, and the impending return of ANA’s Tokyo (Narita) route in October.

Vietjet wrapped up its rollout on Australia’s eastern seaboard in June with its first flight to Brisbane. The carrier now operates eight weekly return flights across Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, with Sydney and Melbourne frequency to increase from September.
