Singapore Airlines has been forced to ground three of its A380s over problems with their Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines in relation to the recent uncontained engine failure of a Qantas A380 on November 4.

According to reports, Rolls-Royce overnight advised SIA to ground three A380s for “precautionary engine changes” following concerns raised during inspections. The three affected A380s, one each in London, Sydney and Melbourne, will be ferried back to Singapore without passengers to have the affected engines changed.

“With these three engines we found oil stains, but this is different to what Qantas had found,” an airline spokeswoman told newsagency Reuters.

It is thought that oil leaks may have contributed to the catastrophic engine failure which led to the grounding of Qantas’s A380 fleet last Thursday.
