Melbourne Airport announced on October 20 that total passenger numbers for the first quarter of the current financial year increased three per cent, driven primarily by strong international growth.
International passenger numbers increased by 10 per cent during the quarter with a 14 per cent increase in September alone as international capacity increased significantly. Domestic passenger numbers were up by one per cent, while transit passenger numbers remained static.

“This result shows the strength of the Melbourne market and bodes well for the future,” said Melbourne Airport CEO Chris Woodruff. “Airlines are responding to this – Singapore Airlines commenced daily A380 services on September 30, and Qatar Airways and V Australia have both announced they will begin Melbourne services in December of this year. On top of this, China Southern will increase services in October, and AirAsia X will increase services to 11 per week in December.”
