The supersonic P1154 was 30% complete when in 1965 the Royal Navy withdrew from the programme in favour of the American F-4 Phantom. P1154 was being built in two versions, one for the RN and one for the RAF while at the time of abandonment, the BS 100 engine was producing 30,000lb thrust. Once again the British had carelessly discarded their technological lead in favour of an American product. Indeed will this again occur with the RAF choosing the AV-BB over the 'big wing' Harrier, something that would ultimately abdicate future VISTOL achievement to the US as that nation begins to appreciate the tactical benefits to be had with VISTOL.

Plenum chamber burning progress

In a resurgence of interest, supersonic V/STOL is once again exercising the minds of the Design Team at Kingston – though this time with the benefits of 16 years V/STOL development experience with the Harrier. Likewise, Rolls-Royce is once more busy with the hardware of Plenum Chamber Burning. In the past few months, Shoeburyness in Suffolk (the original PCB test site), has once again heard the roar of PCB. The Pegasus 2 originally used in the PCB tests of 20 years ago has been reactivated in an MoDsponsored test programme preliminary to possible development for use in future V/STOL aircraft.

In 1961 the Hawker P1154 was the technical first choice of the NATO military team judging entries for the world’s biggest (at that time) international aircraft design competition to develop a V/STOL tactical fighter to NATO Base Military Requirement 3 (NBMR3).
