Navair to Challenge the Domestics?
Bankstown-based charter and air training specialists, Navair, have applied to Transport Australia for Reg 203 status to operate a scheduled air service between Bankstown and Essendon airports. At the time of going to press TA had assigned the request to their bureaucratic limbo with no comment as to when it would be considered. Navair plans to operate a morning and an afternoon service on each Monday and Friday using their Beech Super King Air 200 aircraft. Flight time is around 90 minutes and when you consider that Essendon is significantly closer to the the commercial heart of Melbourne than Tullamarine and the large population and industrial base in Sydney’s outer western suburbs then the service should attract solid long-term backing if it can be launched. Overall waiting time at Bankstoy,,n for this type of service would be a fraction of what it is at Mascot while the drive from, say Liverpool, Penrith or Blacktown to KSA can take upwards of 90 minutes.
Taking these factors into account use of the Navair flights could greatly reduce the overall door-to-door journey time for a reasonable percentage of Sydney and Melbourne travellers. No wonder Transport Australia and the domestics have gone quiet on the scheme!
