In Active Service
Since 1973, the RAAF has operated two squadrons of General Dynamics F-111C aircraft in the strike role, replacing 24 temporary lend-lease F-4E Phantom fighterbombers which had in turn replaced the Canberra bombers of Numbers 1 and 6 Squadrons. The F-111 is a sophisticated weapons platform that has proved to be a very potent and capable military aircraft.
The two F-111 Squadrons, Numbers 1 and 6, are currently based at RAAF Amberley in Queensland. The RAAF originally acquired 24 aircraft in what was a politically controversial decision. Four aircraft have been destroyed in accidents since 1973; a remarkably low wastage rate for an aircraft that constantly operates at high speeds and low levels.
History
Number 1 Squadron is Australia’s oldest squadron, having been formed as part of the Australian Flying Corps in January 1916. The squadron served in Palestine in World War I, flying BE2 and Bristol fighter aircraft. During World War II, No. 1 Squadron saw service throughout the South West Pacific, flying Hudsons, Beauforts and later Mosquitoes. After the war, the unit was equipped with GAF Lincoln bombers and saw service during the Malayan Emergency. The squadron returned to Australia in 1958 and re-equipped with Canberra bombers. In 1970 both 1 and 6 Squadrons were re-equipped with leasehold Phantoms, operated until the arrival of the F-111s in 1973.
