Birdstrikes Evaluated

Reporting Birdstrikes

Since the birdstrike reporting system In Australia was upgraded by the Department of Aviation in 1978, 1501 birdstrikes have been reported – and DofA suspects there are many more unreported instances. . . .

Stark evidence of the damage a birdstrike can inflict upon a modern jet engine. In this instance, a British Airways 747 flew into a flock of racing pigeons shortly after departing Tullamarine. One of the four Pratt & Whitney JT-9D turbofans had to be shut down while a second was operated at reduced power while the aircraft made an emergency landing. Quite obvious in these photos is major fan damage in addition to the tearing of the inner surface of the intake shroud which considering the nature of the metals employed is moot testimony to the devastating effect a birdstrike can have on aircraft regardless of size or airspeed.

From the look of tables supplied to AUSTRALIAN AVIATION, there are those who conscientiously report birdstrikes and those who don’t. About one fifth of the 462 birdstrike cases reported in 1980, came from more than one source – but a lot more haven’t been reported at all.

Air Traffic Control and/or Flight Service Unit personnel contributed 47. 7 per cent of the reports, other ground personnel reported 36. 7 per cent while pilots/aircrew reported 35. 9 per cent, according to the multi-sourced figures.
