1983 Regional Airline Directory

The last twelve months have been particularly difficult for the aviation industry in Australia; however, our Regional Airlines must be fairly satisfied with the way they have overcome the problems presented to them. As well as a recession they have also had to contend with a drought, which has affected many parts of the country. Both these factors have resulted in a reduction in passenger loadings. Depending mainly as they do on country-to-city traffic, It is remarkable that we have not seen the departure of more of these operators from the airline scene. Passenger loadings for the major domestic operators have dropped instead of the projected rise which is normally budgeted for.

It is probably this fall in traffic that has in a way assisted many regional operators. With costs being cut to a minimum both Ansett and TAA have been looking for ways to reduce expenditure and it is their country routes that have been the first to suffer.

• In South East Queensland TAA has terminated operations from Brisbane to Maryborough/Bundaberg and Gladstone which has been to the benefit of Sunstate Airlines.
