A properly organised training school using two-sealers is the only real way to learn to fly an ultralight. This is Austflight's Maxair Double Drifter XP about to commence a training sortie with the student in the front seat
Maxair Double Drifter Xp
Since flying the Maxair Double Drifter ultralight last month my standards of flying adventure have undergone a rapid change. Where once a Cessna Aerobat was my idea of ultimate flying fun, my allegiance has now firmly switched to ultralights in general and the Drifter in particular.
The Double Drifter XP 503 is a US-manufactured, two-seater ultralight, imported into Australia by the Ballina-based Austflight ULA company. With an empty weight of 147 kg, and gross weight of 358 kg, it is one of the bigger ultralights available in Australia, powered by a 48 hp, twin-cylinder Rotax engine.
The Double Drifter, first imported by Austflight late last year, was the first of the two-man ultralights imported into Australia. There are now several companies importing two-sealers, with a couple of local firms considering local production.
