Qantas Looking at Dedicated Freighter Aircraft:
In anticipation of the results of the recently completed International Air Freight Policy Review, Qantas is looking seriously at the possibility of acquiring a dedicated freighter. While Qantas officials are still talking in broad terms on what aircraft type would be suitable it is believed that a 747F is not amongst their options.
Due to seasonal demand the export by air of primary produce from Australia has always been fraught with peaks and troughs. During the peaks, local availability of freight capacity has generally been insufficient and too inflexible to provide a full range of marketing opportunities for developing primary produce export markets abroad served by air. Accord- ing to agricultural officials this has hampered the primary produce market and cost Australia millions of dollars over the years in lost export potential.
