A sight is all too familiar at Australian airports - 'rival' airlines taxi out for departure to, on most occasions, the same destination. Parallel scheduling is probably the single most annoying aspect of our present airline trunk system from the point of view of regular passengers. Ansett boycotted the seminar while TAA's General Manager, Frank Ball, had to take most of the flak on behalf of both majors and in doing so earned much respect from a relatively sympathetic audience.
Deregulation, Friend or Foe?
Federal Aviation Minister, Peter Morris sponsored a seminar on economic regulation of aviation in Australia in Canberra recently, in an attempt to spark informed debate prior to the public hearings of the Government’s independent review of aviation which began public hearings in October. John Spiers chaired one of the sessions at the seminar and attempts here to give a coherent overview of what he considered to be some of the more significant presentations at the seminar.
From the outset, it was clear that shaping the future of air transport in Australia would be a far more complex task than popularly imagined. For instance, just what is meant by “deregulation”?
Mr Bill Henderson, Secretary, Independent Review of Economic Regulation of Domestic Aviation, said the Government wanted a “full-blooded” review and had given the inquiry wide terms of reference.
Its task was made more difficult however by widespread confusion about what deregulation actually meant.
