Super 80 production milestone – wings and fuselage of the first DC-9 Super80 twin-jetliner are joined McDonnell Douglas Corporation facility in Long Beach, California. Manufacture of the new aircraft is moving toward scheduled completion later this year and was introduced into airline services in 1980. With its new Pratt and Whitney aircraft JT8D-209 engines and acoustics advances, the DC9 Super 80 will be the quietest jetliner in operation. Super 80, the largest DC-9 version, will accommodate up to 172 passengers. The cockpit will contain the latest digital computer-directed systems, reducing crew workload.
