Tiger Airways Australia has announced that it will launch a daily flight between Sydney and the Gold Coast from December 15, with fares starting from $39 one way.
“We are thrilled to provide an affordable air travel alternative for families and Tiger Airways customers who wish to fly between Sydney and the Gold Coast in time for the busy summer holiday period,” said managing director Shelley Roberts. “Today’s announcement means we will be increasing our flights by 25 per cent to the Gold Coast with five flights a day (up from four daily flights currently).”

Tiger says that the new service will add an additional 131,000 seats annually in and out of the Gold Coast. Tiger already operates flights from Melbourne and Adelaide to the Gold Coast.
The launch is certainly likely to increase competition with Jetstar, which sees Sydney-Gold Coast services as a key part of its network. The carrier recently launched a new lounge at Gold Coast Airport, and operates a number of domestic flights to and from the airport, as well as international services to New Zealand and Japan.
