Perth Airport recorded its highest passenger figures ever in the 2023-24 financial year, driven largely by regional travel.

More than 16.1 million passengers used the airport in FY24, breaking the previous record of 14.9 million in FY14. The airport also saw its highest ever number of regional passengers, at just over six million – outstripping interstate at 5.7 million and international at 4.3 million.

Perth Airport CEO Jason Waters described the airport’s recovery from COVID-19 as “nothing short of amazing”, saying “extraordinary work” has gone into attracting airlines.

“We have added more than ten million passengers since FY21 and in doing so have easily broken a record that has stood for a decade,” he said.

“The remarkable thing is we expect this growth to continue as airlines continue to show their confidence in the Western Australian market.

“We are now getting on with the job of investing more than $5 billion in new infrastructure to provide the additional capacity our airline partners need to grow their businesses.”

The new infrastructure spending, including an expansion to the international terminal as well as new domestic terminal facilities, a parallel runway, two multi-storey carparks and the airport’s first hotel, comes not long after Qantas and Perth Airport resolved their squabble over the airline’s move to the Airport Central precinct.

Waters said the works will “deliver one airport for the people of Western Australia which will host all flight services in a central location, giving passengers a seamless, world-class travel experience”.

“Works will also begin later this month on our first multi-storey car park outside of Terminal 1 in the current short term car park,” he said.

“We’ve also started work at Terminal 2 to add more departure gates and seating. We will also add more car parks and make changes to the road network around T2 to improve traffic flow along the forecourt.

“Unfortunately, with all of this work, there will be some pain for passengers during construction, but we ask that passengers understand that this is a significant investment which will transform Perth Airport and take us into the future.”

Regional traffic, including FIFO, has been the backbone of Perth’s recovery for some time, with the airport almost reaching 100 per cent of pre-pandemic passengers in the 2022–23 financial year off the back of surging regional numbers.

The airport in January became the first major Australian gateway to surpass total pre-COVID passenger traffic.
