Update – Ahrens AR404

I once said in jest to a fellow aviation scribe that GAF would probably one day stretch the Nomad, add two additional Allisons and call it the Super Nomad! Obviously, this proposal calls for a great deal of imagination, if not mirth, yet a company has developed what at first glance looks to be the product of this writer’s fantasy.

The company is Ahrens Aircraft, the aircraft is the AR404.

Ahrens has been working on the 404 project now since 1976 when the then California-based firm produced the first virtually hand-built 404 prototype. The prototype first flew on 1st December 1976 and after a number of proving flights spent most of the following years idle awaiting final clarification of aircraft specifications. Meanwhile, Ahrens had completed a deal with the Puerto Rican government for the use of the former USAF base at Ramey for further development and manufacture of the production aircraft.
