Oil Price Drop Holds Many Implications for Aviation:
The massive drop in crude oil prices through the early months of this year certainly holds a variety of portents for international aviation.
Winners will be airlines using older techno-aircraft such as the 727-100 and hush kit- ted 707s and DC-8s in addition to early models of the 747 and L1011. These aircraft will be substantially cheaper to operate as generally being fully depreciated their major operating expense is fuel. With a reduced fuel bill, most operators will be able to better cope with the rash of fare discounting that muddied the latter half of 1985 in the US and continued into 1986. Yield erosion hopefully will be restrained, providing airlines, particularly in the US, don’t use the excuse of lower fuel costs to embark on further suicidal fare wars.
