Rotor Torque
Greenpeace Antarctic Expedition
The converted ocean-going tug, “Greenpeace”, departed Sydney, on Monday, 16th December, for Australia’s Antarctic Territory carrying many tonnes of equipment and a Hughes 269C helicopter. Captain Peter Bouquet and his crew of 34 departed in spite of warnings from the Federal Minister for Science, Mr Barry Jones, and other Antarctic experts, that the ship was unsuitable and inadequately prepared for the conditions which it would encounter.
The expedition plans to establish an “International World Park” in the region to stress the environmental aspects of the Antarctic Continent and to attempt to focus World attention on the danger of exploitation of the area’s resources by the various nations which claim territorial rights. However, the warnings from Mr Jones and the experts, related to the ability of the ship to penetrate the ice pack surrounding the continent and to cope generally with the prevailing ice and weather conditions, which are currently the worst experienced in the last 15 years.
