Bureaucratic delays hamper private enterprise initiatives yet again.

Despite nearly four years’ notice of Mr Barney Fernandes’ initiatives to set up the first diploma course for flying training in conjunction with the South Australian Institute of Technology at the Australian Aviation College in Adelaide, the Commonwealth Tertiary Education Commission (CTEC) waited until literally days before the first course was to begin before calling a halt to the course and announcing a Review.

Back in July 1985 the Tertiary Education Commission of SA had not objected to the setting up of the course and so the first course was organised to start on February 3, 1986. By the time of cancellation, the fourteen students from all states in Australia and some from overseas were already assembled in Adelaide. After a telex to the Prime Minister, who is also the Minister for Youth Affairs, the Chairman of the CTEC Mr Hugh Hudson gave the go-ahead for the course to start. However, the next intake of students will only be able to do the aviation content of the course until the situation is resolved.
