Both Boeing and General Electric are extremely happy with progress to date with their UDFflying testbed. The modified 727 first flew on August 20 and already fuel flow and noise levels are lower than initially expected. GE will also test fly the UDF aboard an MD-BO next July while Pratt & Whitney/Allison are to do likewise on a 727 late next year.

New Offset Contracts a Boost to Local Industry:
Major contracts from both Airbus Industrie and General Electric during late September and early October will provide a considerable long-term boost to the local aerospace industry.
Airbus signed contracts worth $10m with both Hawker de Havilland and British Aerospace Australia for work associated with the new A320 twinjet. HDH will manufacture wing ribs for the A320 while BAe Australia will manufacture and assemble wiring looms associated with the aircraft’s electronic fuel system. The end value of the present contract could bring Al’s total commitment to local industry to $130m, they have already signed contracts worth $65m and are primarily interested in joining with Australian industry in a partnership basis on future major aircraft. projects This follows on from what is described in Recce (p4) this issue. Australian Aviation also expects a definitive announcement in the coming month regarding a firm decision by Australian industry to team with an overseas partner in the development of future aircraft programmes. The decision will also come with the full backing of the Government’s Department of Industry, Technology and Commerce which would provide much of the required start-up funding.
