First Ansett Worldwide Jets To America West Airlines:
Ansett’s international leasing division, Ansett Worldwide Aviation Services, is leasing its first 737-300s to America West Airlines of Phoenix, Arizona. The rapidly expanding US region has also contracted for the 12 Ansett Airlines 737-200s which are presently in the process of being withdrawn from local services as new 737-300s arrive.
The first AWAS 737-300 was to go into US service during late October though it is not known at this stage how many of the aircraft America West has acquired from Ansett Worldwide. The Group has been a prolific buyer of airframes these past two years and has written contracts against some 30 737- 300s, 22 Fokker 50 propjets, 6 MDC MD-838 with 3 on option and 8 A320s with a further 9 optioned. Of the 737s, two dozen are for offshore leasing while at least 15 of the Fokker 50s and several of the A320s are also destined never to reach Australia. All of the MD-83s are going to overseas customers and Ansett is also expected to lease outright surplus 727-2008 from 1968 onwards.
