Are Australian Met Services Up To Standard?

Have you ever wondered how good or otherwise the Australian Aviation Meteorological Service is? I know I have and the following article will illustrate my argument that the accuracy of the met service is well below that being offered in most other parts of the world.

Before I begin, let me state that I can only speak as an international pilot and I have no current knowledge of the weather service as it applies to other sections of the industry such as general aviation although I understand that face-to-face briefings will no longer be available. Furthermore, the comments and conclusions are my own and they do not necessarily represent the views of my employer, Qantas Airways.

With very few exceptions, Melbourne being one, worldwide our met briefings are presented to us by Qantas or contract staff and we have no actual direct contact with the forecasters, thus we have no problem with regard to personal briefings. The forecasts we receive come in mainly in two parts; an en route wind/weather forecast and the terminal forecasts. These forecasts assist the Captain in making his decision as to the flight fuel order.
