Coalition Policy Set To Privatise Airlines

Privatisation of Qantas and Australian Airlines a Primary Aim of Coali Ion Aviation Policy

Privatisation ranks high on the policy menu of the Coalition party and no more so than with aviation. Mr Bruce Lloyd, the shadow minister for aviation has committed a future Liberal/ National Party government to selling all of its ownership of Australian Airlines in addition to a minority shareholding of Qantas

Privatisation of many large English utilities, such as Telecom, has fared extremely ‘well’ in the marketplace. Similarly, the sale of shareholdings in British Aerospace has created nothing less than an enthusiastic response amongst British investors just as it will for Rolls Royce and British Airways at some point hopefully in 1987.

Closer to home the political catch cry of ‘sell TAA’ (as we called it then) has long been heard yet has never been translated to more than a muted form of political rhetoric. Nowadays though the situation has changed. The Two Airline Policy (TAP) is finally approaching its sunset and the general feeling within the populace is that although the airline system works well and is safe, it doesn’t allow enough flexibility in terms of true competition between the domestic.
