The Israeli Air Force Today Part 1

Born some thirty-eight years ago from humble beginnings and with a hotchpotch of light civil and war surplus aircraft, the Israeli Defence Force Air Force (IDFAF) has grown into a force whose exploits and qualities are admired and respected by both friends and foes alike. There can be no doubt, that given the tasks presented to it the IDFAF has performed its intended job admirably.

Since its independence, Israel has been in a state of almost constant hostility with its neighbouring Arab countries, as well as the irregular forces under their patronage. The IDFAF, along with other branches of the Israeli Defence Force (IDF), has had to remain in a state of constant alert. Since 1948’s War of Independence the IDF has been involved in five major conflicts, plus numerous minor ones.

It is in this environment that the IDFAF has grown, maintaining a vital role in enabling the State of Israel to survive despite the numerically superior and hostile forces which surround her. Today the IDFAF comprises a personnel strength of approximately 30,000, with another 10,000 (including reserve pilots) available on mobilisation.
