Charles Ligetl’s USA Tour

Charles spent nearly 6 weeks in North America, mainly in the USA. The location of greatest interest was the annual EAA Air Convention in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. In spite of many difficulties, Charles managed to get his Stratos to Oshkosh on the eve of the opening. Due to airline space problems, the Stratos had been unloaded at San Francisco and trucked 5,000km to Chicago, taking 5 days. Since Charles had been unaware of this, he thought the Stratos (and his whole venture) was lost. When the aircraft finally did arrive, it had suffered damage both from handling and the trucking, so needed some repairs. It takes a lot to daunt Charles.

Although the Stratos does not fit the US definition of an ultralight, Charles was allowed to fly at Oshkosh on his AUF interim pilot certificate/ DofA student pilot licence. The Stratos immediately caught the imagination of the Americans. Very quickly, Charles was given a solo flying slot during the 15 minutes before the daily airshow.
