Rolls Royce Tay Set for Success

The Tay, the latest engine from Rolls Royce, promises to be a money-spinner for the company. It has been ordered in substantial numbers to power two new aircraft, the Fokker 100 airliner and the Gulfstream IV corporate jet and looks set to emulate the success of its predecessor, the Spey.

The decision to go ahead with the Tay came in December 1982, following Fokker’s commitment to power its new aircraft with the engine. However, it was Gulfstream that signed the Tay launch order, deciding that the reduced thrust version of the engine exactly suited its needs. Its order for 200 engines, plus spares, was signed in March 1983 and a further order for an additional 200 has since been received. The following November Fokker ordered 100 Tays.

First flight of the Tay took place in September 1985 at the National Business Aircraft Association show at New Orleans. The engine powered the prototype Gulfstream IV the combination appeared four months ahead of schedule to meet Gulfstream chairman Alan Paulson’s desire to demonstrate the aircraft in flight at the show.
