Ntsb Report Reveals Flaws in General Aviation Aircraft Design
The United States National Transportation Safety Board has found that hundreds of people are being killed and injured unnecessarily each year in light aircraft through not using the shoulder harness component of their seat belt.
Through the years from 1972 to 1981 there were 36,500 accidents in the US involving General Aviation aircraft. Of the 76,600 occupants of these aircraft, more than 12,500 (16%) were killed and more than 6,600 (9%) were seriously injured. The NTSB had found that many of the fatal and serious injuries could have been prevented if only the occupants had been provided with more effective protection systems.
Analysis of 39 typical accidents of the period revealed that survival could be expected in crashes In which longitudinal acceleration loads were in the 30 to 35G range with a velocity change of 60 to 70 feet per second. In the vertical direction, the acceleration toads were in the 25 to 30G range with a velocity change of 50 to 60fps.
