The Year That Was

Nineteen hundred and eighty-six is rapidly fading and another year has come and gone.

As far as aviation is concerned it was a pretty good year. Foremost, it was a relatively safe year for flying with few of the catastrophes that plagued 1985. Terrorism was rife though ironically it affected aviation not through direct acts of hijacking but by its subtle portent of fear following numerous European bombings and the US raid against Libya. For this, international long-haul aviation was to pay dearly with a substantial decline in uplift through the northern spring and summer. This effectively reduced by half the overall annual growth of IATA carriers and yet again makes one appreciate what a precarious financial environment most of the world’s airlines live in.
