• The first of four prototypes of the S-76 was rolled out by Sikorsky on 11 January and began ground running tests which will take 200 hours. •The General Electric F-404 turbofan intended for the McDonnell Douglas/Northrop F-18 had its first run on 8 January.

•Larger aircraft have been introduced onto the Australian-South African route. Qantas commenced Boeing 747B services on 6 January and South African Airways will use Boeing 747SP aircraft, replacing the Boeing 707s used by both airlines.
