On The Airbands
Perhaps if more newspaper journalists charged with reporting aviation matters were airband monitors, a lot fewer errors would find their way into the daily newspapers!
Some reports concerning a ‘near miss’ between Qantas 44 and Continental 002 over the Tasman must have given the reading public a grossly inaccurate picture of what actually did occur, as regular monitors who heard the transmissions would confirm. Keep up the listening watch and you will be the one who knows what actually happens! Ronald McDougall writes enquiring about back issues carrying reviews on receivers. We did run a series entitled “Let you Ears have Wings’ back in 1982 and again in 1984. Both had equipment reviews, in particular the December 1984 issue. Although a great deal of the equipment listed in this issue is still on the market, new technology means that some state-of-the-art equipment is not listed. So we’re working at doing another update of the series, perhaps early 1987.
Mick Peoples from Daceyville NSW advises of an ATIS broad-cast on 112. 5 MHz from Auckland International Airport, which he heard while overseas. It went like this. . . “Auckland Terminal information, Delta, runway zero five, wet. Wind zero two zero degrees magnetic, twenty to twenty-five knots, visibility, twenty kilometers reduced to ten kilometers in rain. Cloud, three octas, one two zero zero feet, five octas, one eight zero zero feet. Temperature one seven degrees Celsius, QNH one zero one two. Expect ILS approach. Two thousand feet wind, zero two zero degrees at twenty knots. Taxiway two closed. Pilots and controllers cocktail evening. . . Commercial Travellers Club, Remuera. 1930 start. On first contact with Auckland Tower or Approach, notify receipt of Delta. ” Nothing like mixing business with pleasure Mick! Thanks for the advisory.
