With some 440 orders and options behind it (a commercial airliner record) the first Airbus Industrie A320 takes to the air from a misty Toulouse runway on February 22nd. Ansett introduced the A320 locally during mid-1988 while Australia get their first aircraft the following year.

Stronger Trans Tasman Trade Ties Good News for Our Defence and Aerospace Industries:
The joint military trade agreement signed in March between the Australian and New Zealand Governments holds positive implications for our defence industry.
Principally, the agreement tied New Zealand in with Australia’s planned purchase of 8 light patrol frigates. New Zealand will also be replacing its Leander class vessels during this period and will now share the not inconsiderable cost savings of joining Australian shipyards in building a total of 12 of these ships.
