The Fokker F. 27 Friendship holds the enviable distinction of being the definitive DC-3 replacement.

Considerable effort was put forward by several leading manufacturers to come up with a formula for a DC-3 replacement, an elusive task in the late 1940s and 1950s, but the quest was not an easy one. The prime complicating factor was the extreme versatility of the ubiquitous DC-3. Numerous ex-military C-47s had been civilianised to enter civil passenger and cargo service and they formed the backbone of civil aviation passenger carrying capacity in the immediate postwar era in many countries such as Australia. The ready availability, modest price and superb flexibility made the DC-3 a particularly desirable aircraft for the airlines when little else was readily accessible to them.
