•The temporary withdrawal of approval to sell seven Boeing E-3A AWACS aircraft to Iran was announced on 28 July. This followed opposition in the US Congress brought about by concern that a highly classified system could fall into Soviet hands because of the 1200-mile common border with the Iranians.

•The Handley Page Hastings was retired from RAF service on 30 June after a career spanning 31 years. The surviving four aircraft were operated by the Radar Flight of No. 230 OCU based at RAF Scampton.
