GE36 propfan demonstrator engine aboard Boeing's 727-100 test bed. This developmental engine successfully test flew through 1986/87 aboard the 727 and is now completing the final stages of its in-flight test programme aboard an MD-80. As an example of the potential efficiency of propfans, this early series test engine, despite having significantly more thrust, burnt 49% less fuel during the flight tests by comparison with the standard JT8s fitted aboard the 727.

Update – Boeing 7J7

Boeing has now formally embarked on a comprehensive programme to develop a completely new aircraft for introduction as early as 1992. The 7J7, as it is called during the current development stage, will seat about 150 passengers and take advantage of emerging technologies in propulsion, aerodynamics, structures and aircraft systems, as well as Innovative concepts in cabin design.

Boeing is committed to keeping the aircraft affordable, while at the same time designing it to provide major improvements in operating economics, passenger appeal and flexibility.

The 7J7 development effort is focusing on a twin-aisle configuration. This is a major turning point, since short-to medium-range jetliners of this size have never before had two aisles. With a fuselage cross-section of 188 inches (4. 8m), the 7J7 would have six seats per row in a 2-2-2 arrangement. Seats and isles would be wider than in comparably sized aircraft, affording unsurpassed comfort.
