Sydney Gets Its First Usn Carrier Visit Since the Vietnam War Era

The first US aircraft carrier to enter Sydney Harbour since the end of the Vietnam War, visited Sydney during 5-16 June. Since the numerous visits of US carriers during the 1960s they have not been seen in Eastern Australian waters for some time, although they make regular cruises to Western Australia. The visit of the Midway was tinged with a sense of history as it coincided with the 45th anniversary of the battle of Midway.

One of three Midway Class carriers, the largest US warships constructed during World War 11, USS Midway (CV-41) was launched on 20 March 1945 and commissioned on 1 O September 1945. Originally constructed with a standard displacement of 45,000 tons, Midway has been extensively modernised. Decommissioned during August 1955, she entered Puget Sound Shipyard for extensive upgrading which included an angled flight deck, new arresting gear, three steam catapults, an enclosed hurricane bow, new lifts and revised electronics. Midway re-entered service during September 1957 and was to later play a significant role during the Vietnam War with her aircraft flying 11,900 combat missions during 1965 and the early part of 1966.
