Australia May Link With Soviet Union to Promote Space Base
Promoters of the Australian space base on Cape York Peninsula are preparing to hold talks with directors of the Soviet ‘commercial’ space programme in an endeavour to satisfy the end needs of both parties, stated Mr Stan Schaetzel of Hawker de Havilland at the third national Space Engineering Symposium in Canberra on July 2.
For Australia, the link would provide a major potential client, that in turn would add much credibility to the programme. In turn, the Soviets, by forming a joint company with a majority Australian interest, would be able to commercially market their Proton and future commercial launchers to international clients without suffering the present security preservation problems by having their launches restricted to the USSR.
