Podcast: Rex’s $80m life raft

written by Robyn Tongol | November 13, 2024

It’s been three-and-a-half months since Rex went into administration, and while the planes are still flying, so far the administrators have yet to find a buyer for its regional turboprop operations despite securing a deal to sell off the profitable aeromedical wing Pel-Air.

Enter the federal government, which has extended its support for the airline to the tune of $80 million in financing, which the administrator has indicated it wants to use to keep the lights on until at least mid-2025 while growing the operational fleet.

Adam and Jake discuss whether this latest effort from the government is likely to bear fruit, and what it might mean for Rex’s regional rivals.

Plus, Qantas objects to Virgin’s wet-leasing deal with Qatar – but does the Flying Kangaroo have a leg to hop on?

Your discussion in this podcast around politicians getting free preferential treatment from Qantas simply missed a point. I do not see this matter as being about whether or not our political elites should be able to fly in Business Class and use airline lounges, but that this product should not be offered free (and accepted under such circumstances) by those on the public payroll. We’ve seen a politician forced to resign over accepting a bottle of wine… how on earth is free upgrading and lounge access from an airline any different? Let ALL public servants who desire or are entitled to J/C/D class and lounge access pay for it. Most of them will be able to afford their own memberships (and they keep the FF points anyway), but if that cost is to be picked up by the taxpayer, so be it, and let’s have that specific debate. This grubby business of public servants (ESPECIALLY politicians) accepting offers of free upgrades and lounge access has to stop!
