South Africa is the latest country to modify its Mirage Ill force for extended life operation. The modified Mirage, designated Cheetah by the SAAF, features canards, a major avionics and naval attack upgrade using locally developed systems and a new nose designed to accommodate an entirely new and improved radar. About two dozen SAAF Mirage Ills will be brought up to Cheetah standard over the next four years. (Wide World photo)

Staffing Reductions at the Gaf:
Defence Minister Kim Beazley announced during July that staff reductions would occur at the GAF, Garden Island and Williamstown Dockyards in addition to the Office of Defence Production in Canberra.
Total reductions will reach nearly 1400 by the end of this year and will see around 670 people being shed from GAF’s workforce alone. Staff reductions of 12% (40 people) are also being made at the Office of Defence Production’s (ODP) Canberra headquarters. In announcing the cuts, Defence Minister Kim Beazley said, “The Government believes that GAF should be run in a way that will enable it to compete effectively with commercial operations in Australia and abroad. We will be establishing a company to take over the operations of the present Government Aircraft Factories. That company will be owned entirely by the Government and it will be expected to operate on a commercial basis, essentially as a statutory authority. ” Productivity problems at GAF were highlighted in the special report on GAF in our recent May edition.
